THE VALUE OF FRIENDSHIPS

A Handbook of Discussion Topics for 2005

One of the core values of NASO is 'friendship', which is expressed in a variety of ways. For human beings, there is little doubt that the drive to make friends is innate, though in too many instances it also remains an aspiration yet to be realised. This Handbook, The Value of Friendships, focuses a great deal on lives. Many of them had friendships which flourished and developed, whilst others built relationships that fragmented or failed. Some sections describe partnerships that benefited from the combination of talents, whether in science, the arts, politics or marriage.

There are accounts of situations that have strained loyalty and friendship to breaking point. However, in a world obsessed with security from terrorism, there are studies which explore social and personal mechanisms for better co-operation and trust. The Value of Friendships is a year long reflection on humanity's most pressing need.

With some forward planning and gathering of resources, any discussion group can begin to feel closer to the achievements, and the anguish, of a host of people whose lives have shaped the world we live in now. From their experiences, we can increase our appreciation of the value of friendships.
